PreOps – sortova and scubagirlab start farming keys to make the mission possible.

3:00PM – Rattrap and BadAsh start scanning the map looking for blocking links that will need to be addressed later in the night.

9:00PM – Twelve Agents Meetup at Panera in Brier Creek to exchange portal keys. Many of them have already driven over an hour to get there.  They are already tired, and need to make the same trip back from where they came.

9:30PM – After fellowship and a mission briefing by TheHoneyBadger, the teams are assigned their roles and embark on their mission.

9:45PM – BadAsh establishes operations HQ at the memorial site of the “Snake Eyes” portal.

10:00PM – Blocking link take-down orders are assigned to the in field agents as they proceed to their assigned areas.

10:15PM – Wormy and KimmieJoJo encounter fierce resistance from resistance agent RealReady in Morrisville.  BadAsh eventually relocated GeneralGreene and TacticTal to assist in keeping this unruly smurf from replacing blocking links and fields.

11:50PM – Another group of Enlightened start work on a field, which was hoped to link Elon University to Mebane to Pittsboro.  They throw their links from Elon to Mebane.  We’ve now got a blocker preventing us from finishing our field.  Woonz and b4monkey are dispatched and ADA their links.  (Sorry about screwing up your field.)

12:30PM – JammerJoe and BlueFusion13 encounter resistance from resistance agent KN0WL3DG3 who keeps throwing the same links back over the link path.  They eventually tire him out enough for him to retreat.

12:45AM –  YetiNC continues to spar with resistance agent JoeXray in Newton Grove, capturing some of the same portals three times.  Eventually his bravery accomplishes the goal of having a free west to east link path.

1:06 AM – Robdalf is dispatched to deal with more links thrown by resistance agent KN0WL3DG3.  He kills the last link at 1:24AM.

1:27AM – VirtKitty fires the single diagonal link across our cell, forming two triangles.  Two fields go up.   All of AM02-LIMA-06 is now enjoying green skies.

1:28AM-1:44AM – A carefully crafted sequence of links is made.  Establishing a dark green field, so thick you can’t see the roads below on your scanner

1:45AM-?? – Battle weary, tired, and jubilant our brave agents celebrate the day when all the Citizens of AM02-LIMA-06 were able to enjoy the gift of green skies overhead.

Operation Cassandra – Washington DC Aug 17th

I was able to attend the anomaly event in Washington DC on Aug 17th that was part of the 2 week Cassandra event. I’d like to share my experiences with my fellow agents.

First and foremost, if you ever get a chance to attend an officially organized event from Niantic…Go. Don’t think, don’t question, just Go. It was without a doubt the most fun I ever had in my Ingress encounters and I would absolutely recommend you try to attend one. The flashy pin and stickers are fun, but the opportunity to meet and interact with agents on a large scale as part of operation is invaluable. I meet many agents I can now call friends, we shared stories and engaged in battle together and came out afterwards with memories we’ll never forget. I also now have a larger network of agents with whom I can exchange keys and plan future operations with.

So what was the anomaly like you might ask? In a word, Insane. Let me recap some of the days events.

9:00am – pre-event brunch 13767487301411376748757916

I’d say around 60 agents showed up in a small teashop where we were issued ID badges, team leaders were handed operational manuals (maps/portal lists/etc) and we had discussions of strategy, plans, ethics, and more. And yes, that is Thevanin (Bob) our compatriot from the triad in the second picture. The majority was operational information provided by the leadership of DMV (District/Maryland/Virginia Enlightened) Andrew Krug, Daphne D, & Lona Fowder. They deserve huge props for the amount of time and effort they put into organizing a battle plan for this event. The highlight for me was a motivational speech provided by Gadgetchaser, who the DC locals basically have branded a legend. He’s active army. He plays fair. He plays honest. He plays HARD. He has over 8 mil AP to show for it. I’m told that when he shows up on player tracker, the resistance tuck tail and leave the area. After listening to him, I had a whole new view of how I wanted to play. First, if you attack a portal, don’t stop until you’ve burned it down. If the R can deter you from capturing a portal they’ve won. On the other hand, if they accept you will be relentless, they will soon stop  trying and you can blaze a path. Let your reputation precede you. Second, it’s not just about destroying, it’s also about building. Don’t just destroy it and hang a single resonator trophy on it. Fill it out, shield it up and link it up. So now, not only have you taken their portal, but you’ve made it that much harder for them to reclaim. There is obviously, a degree of reason to apply though. 4 VR shields on a lvl 4 portal isn’t necessarily the best use. Use your resources in a way that makes you effective and in a way that you get the most value. I left inspired to play and battle and for the day’s upcoming event and we needed it.

11:00am – battlefield preparations 1357 Bursters

We headed out in our battle groups to our designated area of operation to begin capturing, building, shielding, and linking portals. We encountered no resistance as we captured the portals in our quadrant around the Martin Luther King memorial. Our group of 5 was composed of 2 attackers, 2 builders, & 1 moder. I was an attacker and as you can guess my job was to fire bursters. Just fire and fire and fire. The builders deployed and redeployed resonators to maintain control of a portal. The Moder placed shields, force amps, & turrets on portals to strengthen them and created links to nearby portals for added strength and points. I felt certain of victory when I even hacked a Jarvis from on the MLK portals. Some of the smaller 2-3 man groups on bike came through and finished upgrading portals. Prior to the start, all portals in our zone were level 8, linked up and fully moded. We were ready for war. As an interesting aside, we ran into puddinPOP. He was there as a tourist with his wife, but trying to get in a little ingress on the down low. You may recall meeting him when he visited a month earlier from Chincoteague VA. It’s a small world.

1:00pm – event commences Cassandra1

Finally the resistance shows up. They knock down two of our portals. We make our way over to them and reclaim them. They begin attacking the cluster at MLK so we head back over there to defend. No one there, it was apparently a drive by. We can see portals flipping in the adjacent zone but our’s seems to be fairly calm. A short while later we get a directive from command to go take the 2 southern portals at the world war 2 memorial. The first real skirmish ensues. Myself and my fellow attacker begin firing. They replace resonators as we destroy them. We begin firing all out. Two of us are firing level 8 bursters as fast as we can only stopping to use a level 8 power cube to refill xm. We manage to knock the portal back to gray several times, but their builders seem to have the upper-hand recapturing the portal. Occasionally we manage to capture, but they have attackers also who are taking out our resonators. We continue to battle over these two portals for maybe 10 minutes. I fired around 100 l8 xmps and used 4-5 cubes. The R finally stop attacking. Whether they succeeded or were giving different orders we don’t know. As they leave we watch and feel a huge sense of victory as we see it was a group of 10-12 agents and 5 of us were able to hold our ground against them. And then everything turned green. A BAMF appears over DC. We’re elated. I’d heard rumors of planning such a field, but actually seeing it appear was such a emotional lift. The resistance is visibly crushed. I heard comments after the event that after the field appeared many R agents even talked about giving up. We then get a call to rush to the Korean War Memorial. It’s been flagged as a volatile portal and the war is on. A bigger battle ensues. We meet up with more enlightened agents and a back and forth battle ensues for another 10 minutes. Very similar to the first skirmish except we now have double the forces. Our moder wanders in there direction doing a little recon. We’re still outnumbered significantly. We battle on until 5 after when we know the reading has been taken.

2:05pm – onto cluster 2

We begin making our way to the Smithsonian Gardens, out assigned area for cluster 2. Two of the players from the last battle remain with our team, so we’re up to 7. One member reaches out to a friend and he agrees to come join us. Shortly later we’re a fully roaring level 8 portal machine. The Gardens is a small fenced in area about 200×200 ft square with a dozen or so portals. There are at least 15-20 agents from each side in the area. We decide to conserve resources a bit and play a more defensive role, firing bursters to prevent them from filing out and linking up the portals. We have 30+ minutes before the reading so it seems wise to hold back on a full engagement. I discover my battery on the phone is down to 20% so I go into power saving mode. We believe we know one of the portals that will be a volatile from the photos flashed in the previous ingress report, so we make our way over there and set up camp. Seems the resistance had the same thought and we notice a large group stationed nearby. We battle over the portal for the next 10 or so minutes kind of casually, but as the top of the hour approaches the paces quickens. Somewhere amidst this the field over DC falls. It’s reappears briefly, but falls again. Then the volatile announcement is made and it’s all out war for this portal. This time flip cards start flying. I still am chain firing bursters and throw two Jarvii at the portal at well. It’s still back and forth until 5 after and we’re not really sure who controlled it, but it’s time to move to cluster 3

3:05pm onto the capital Dr. Lynton-WolfeCapitol

We make our way east up the mall. Each cluster is getting smaller and smaller and so the number of agents in the area grows. We station ourselves at the National Museum of the American Indian, a cluster of 9 portals. There are only a few resistance agents in the area. It seems they’re focused somewhere else. One agent we spot sitting nearby continues to try to deploy, so we still fire bursters at a measured rate to slow him down. We sit down and rest a little bit. We spot power cubes on the ground. Seems some R in the are are trading gear so some of our agents wander off and acquire some free power cubes. We notice a number of links coming from a nearby portal and radio into HQ. They deploy our two builders to go take them out while we hold ground at the Museum. They succeed. We get word of the next volatile and it’s off to the Capital building. As we arrive we’re greeted by Dr. Oliver Lynton-Wolfe and his “lacky.” We’re give a small envelope with stickers, a flashy pin, maps, and a code card. The items given out at the official kick off at 1pm that we did not go to. Dr Lynton-Wolfe shakes our hands and thanks us for our effort and hands us another code card (multi-hack). As he departs he makes a comment about let him know if there’s more he can do to help. I seize the moment and state we can always use more help. He looks back at me. I repeat my statement. He reaches into his jacket and pulls out a different set of cards. He walks up and hands me a code card…Jarvis Virus. He hands one to each member of the team and tells us to use them wisely. From the time we arrived we were also actively battling over the capital building portal. This time there are at least 50 agents fighting over the portal. We’re still greatly outnumbered. This quickly turns into another virus battle. There are so many being used that the portal is being flipped back before the animation even finishes. I contribute 3 or 4 more Jarvii to the melee. It’s an all out war.

4:05 Off to Penn Square portrait gallery

We make our way to the National Museum of Crime & Punishment. It’s another portal that appeared in the Ingress report so we plan to hold firm there. Another R team also stands here and we trade it back and forth for 15-20 minutes. Daphne arrives on scene to watch over the battle and is still carrying out communications to other groups on the phone. She’s clearly giddy with excitement. About quarter til the hour a new field appears over the sky turning everything green. We’re ecstatic knowing this could be enough to put our victory in hand. We battle over the portal while we wait with baited breath hoping the field would stand. Unfortunately, a few minutes later it fell. We get word to go to the Portrait Gallery and try to capture that portal. There’s a huge crowd and chaos ensues for the remaining time trying to capture and maintain control of the portal. Dr. Lynton-Wolfe stands upon the steps watching over the battle. Following the reading he invites us to Penn Station for an after party and to hear the results of the days anomaly.

5:30 After PartyPenn2 Penn3 Penn4 Comic Penn1White House

We converged on Penn Station for some cold celebratory beers and to await the results. I caught up with Thevanin and we swapped some stories of the day. Finally the score announcement was made and we were disappointed, but in light of the factor we we’re so severely outnumbered, we actually took the day as a moral victory. We also managed to setup three 1.5 million MU fields in a single day, which is no laughing matter. Dr. Lynton-Wolfe was signing copies of the first ingress comic pictured above. Furtive is more envious of that than you can imagine since she gave me the Hands of Fate moniker and clearly the doctor is also familiar with the movie. After an hour or so I decided it was time to go get checking into my hotel, take a shower and find some dinner as it had been an exhausting day. Later that evening I also went back out and captured some portals and brought home some souvenir keys. If you’re interested in a key, let me know

If I may, I’d like to share some thoughts as I reflect back upon the event.

First, I’ll start with the practical. Hydrate! I know you’ve heard it before but walking around DC for 6 hours was exhausting. Another tip, good shoes. I wore a pair of old sneakers and I had blisters on one foot to show for it. Also consider the weather. It was a gorgeous sunny day and I went most of it without sunscreen nor a hat on and I have the sunburn on my forehead to show for it. All fairly obvious, but two of the three I missed amid all the preparations I made. And on the technical side, charger cables. I have an anker 10k and still ran into battery issues. My issue was not the battery but a cable with a loose fitting which caused charging to stop at times and only charge as usb others. Buy a few good charger cables and always carry an extra if you plan to be out for an extended time.

The real takeaway for the day though was community. This seems to be the one thing the enlightened have excelled at and the resistance has failed at. The DC area was not much different than here in the triangle. They were outnumbered 2 to 1 just like us, but they still seem to win the battle and the difference is they play as a community. It’s not about how many portals you control or the biggest field. It’s about playing together and having fun. And when we as a community come out to play we dominate. So let this be a rallying call to you all. Talk to your fellow agents. Better yet, go meet your fellow agents face to face. When we come together as a group, we’re unstoppable. There will be more events organized in the area. I intend to see to that. Please come out and take part. Get to know your fellow agents and you’ll see how much more fun this game is as a group. We will paint the triangle green and I will make the resistance flee from me like Gadgetchaser!

June 22nd, 2013 – Operation: Kudzu

Kudzu is a vine originating from Southeast Asia that was introduced into the North America to prevent soil erosion. Now considered a nuisance by the United States Department of Agriculture, it currently grows at a rate of 150,000 acres annually. It has a nickname: “The vine that ate the South”.

Operation Kudzu Mission Team

On June 22nd, noname4444 rented a 15 passenger van, in which 13 enlightened L8 agents climbed in for a ride that shouldn’t be soon forgotten. Snacks, drinks (including hint water), awesome music courtesy of Buglermcd, and laughter galore was to be had, and so it began.

Inside Van

View From Inside

The trip started in the Brier Creek area in Northwest Raleigh, made its way through RDU Airport, around Morrisville, through the western part of Cary, down to Apex, up towards North Carolina State University, through Downtown Raleigh, and finally up towards North Raleigh before heading back to the initial meeting location.

Our presence did not go unnoticed. Furtivecoda, while unable to respond to our destruction of her handywork in Apex, saw what we were doing and held some conversation in all comms. In addition, TehMoustache actually came out and saw the war wagon for himself. Quote of the night: “You guys have a church van?” “You mean you don’t?”

Halfway Complete

Once the van made its way back to base (with an amazing sing-along of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody), there was already talk of a Round 2. A fair amount of the agents already on-board were unable to go much longer (some had long drives home, some had work in the morning, and I myself was just plain wiped out), however some more agents were employed for a second shift and made their way north to Durham to raise more hell.

Throughout the night a significant number of L8 portals were made (141 to be exact), and much like kudzu, it spre

May 16, 2013 – History made in Downtown Apex

Tasty Shaper Fuel!

Tasty Shaper Fuel!

May 16th, 2013, will forever be remembered as the day when the citizens of Apex, NC ended their long winter of suffering under Resistance control and discovered level eight Enlightened beacons of hope, opportunity and a better way of life.

Below is the chronology of this incredibly complex tactical operation and highlights the bravery, stamina, and compassion commonly found in Enlightened agents.

19:00  – Enlightened agents meet at Panera, at Brier creek to ensure that strict nutritional requirements were met.    It became obvious during the meal that these agents are not just fighting for their side, but are part of a larger Enlightened family.  Together they fight for all those who have not yet felt the joy of living under green skies.

19:30 – Refreshed and recharged, under cover of dusk, the agent convoy stealthily  transits to Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.  Their goal is to create high level portals for the continued betterment of the Triangle.

The original BCC portal

Agents pay respects

19:33 – Arrival at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.   The creation of a level eight beacon of hope, is cause for much much rejoicing, singing, and merry making.  Spirits were high as the brave agents built not one, but six level eight portals.   The exuberant agents methodically collected the stockpiles of supplies needed to help those suffering under Resistance control.

The original BCC portal

The original BCC portal

20:30 – Departure from Memorial Gardens.  Now supplied enough to help small pockets of citizens escape from under Resistance control,   Many of them thoughtfully asked, “What if we had even more supplies?”

Large BCC Group

“We would be able to help so many more who suffer the daily pain of living near a Resistance portal.” Having exhausted the resources available at this location and knowing that a large storehouse of gear would allow them to respond when needed, they headed to Cary, NC.

20:50 – Arrival in Cary, NC.  The citizens of Cary have a desire to live a peaceful life under a green sky, sadly this is not always possible for them.  They frequently are faced with bouts of blue preventing them from enjoying life as it should be.  Painfully aware of this fact, they headed to the Cary Town Hall complex, hoping to continue building level eight Enlightened beacons.

With no visible Resistance in sight, most likely scared away at the sight of these warriors,  the Town Hall which was controlled by resistance, quickly changed to a satisfying soothing green.  Even with the late arrival of apocaloptimist, a lone Resistance agent, the agents were now fully armed.  Many were armed to capacity and struggling to carry the vast quantities of gear they had collected.

An example of the L8 portal goodies

22:02 – Plans to Liberate Apex, NC, Initiated   Earlier in the week agent BadAsh experienced great success bringing a taste of enlightenment to the suffering people of Apex, NC.  During open discussion, despite many agents being tired and battle weary, an incredibly compassionate idea was voiced.   The people of Apex deserve to be enlightened.

After more consideration to the horrible suffering that was going on in Apex, we decided that the best way we could help was to build the very first level eight portals as a beacon of hope to encourage and embolden the citizens of Apex to rise up against the influence of the Resistance.

This would be the FIRST time citizens of Apex, had the opportunity to view the marvels of a level eight portal.  The agents were amazingly excited about the hope they were going to bring.  These eight brave souls descended on Apex hoping to turn it into an Enlightened level eight stronghold.

22:20 – The agents arrived in Apex and immediately started erasing the resistance presence and erecting level eight portals.    As they were walking down the street diligently working a feared Resistance agent, furtivecoda, appears out of nowhere and begins blasting away.   Thus began a game of cat and mouse as the hard work by the Enlightened was partially destroyed and rebuilt numerous times.  In the end the Enlightened team was able to collect four servings of resources from most of the portals along N Salem Street.    Overall the agents were pleased to have given Apex citizens a taste of what a good life could be like.

After the fierce battle a local patron at a nearby watering hole agreed to take a photo of the heros that had brought her so much hope and joy.  Her eyes were beginning to open, and they were seeing a green future.

The photo at the end of this report documents this historic, momentous occasion.  Everyone was filled with joy but there was a strange sense of foreboding for an unknown reason…  (click on this photo to view it full size for full effect)

When agent futivecoda was asked if she was glad everyone came out to her town she replied “No, not really.   I was in the middle of watching Dr. Who.”   But despite being busy even she came out to admire and look with awe and wonder at the sight of level eight Enlightened portals.

Being escorted away

Escorted away “for our safety”

The night ended with agent furtivecoda escorting the enlightened agents back to their cars.   We were told this was for “our safety”, but agents openly doubted that was the true reason.

Before departing multiple Enlightened agents declared this “The best trip ever!”  and vowed to return to help free the people of Apex, NC.

22:30 – Multiple agents return to where the night began.  Four hours after leaving Brier Creek Memorial Gardens, many agents returned.  Their desire was to rebuild their stockpiles.  For they know we face a formidable foe, but with the support of our Enlightened Family of agents, we WILL help the citizens of the Triangle Area become Enlightened…. Triangle Enlightened…

The State of NC State # 3 (4/21-4/27)

Woohoo! It’s time for another State of NC State!

I got the powah!

  • leafstorm – L3 on 4/22 – congrats man! Now your bursters are actually useful!
  • mezmer – L8 on 4/25 – Eight, eight, eight is great! Hooray!
  • Hakino134 – L5 on 4/26 – Told you it wouldn’t be long before you hit 5!

Other Happenings

  • Over the past week campus has been pretty green, however last night (4/26)  a smurf or two came through and flipped the portals near the brickyard. Go get that AP!
  • There have been reports of new Resistance players showing up on campus. Who knows, we may have some more blue competition sometime soon!
  • It seems they are not done throwing new portals onto campus yet. Stay on the lookout for grey!
  • Reading days are upon us, which means lots of studying for exams. Don’t forget to take the occasional break though! Ingress is a great way to settle down for an hour or so, to get your legs some exercise and your brain something different to chew on.

The State of NC State #2 (4/12-4/20)

state-of-stateIt’s that time of week again! And you thought I wasn’t serious when I said weekly (even if a bit late)!

Lots of new level 5 players this week!

  • Madpuppeteer – Level 5 on 4/12 – Good work man!
  • dss – level 5 on 4/14 – Great day to hit L5!
  • leafstorm – Level 2 on 4/15 – First ding of many to come!
  • Frozenyogurt – Level 5 on 4/15 – Enjoy the new bursters, and thanks for knocking down that blue field!

Big Event Special!

On the 14th there was an XM anomaly that required Bell Tower and Zipcar to be linked together to fully harness the energy (or something, I forgot the actual story behind it). Basically it was a game of capture the flag, where the two portals had to be linked together in order to win. Players from around the triangle gathered to participate in this event.

The game start was delayed by 30 minutes to accommodate some organization issues. Once the game started, it didn’t take long for a small group of level 7 and 8 players on bikes to reach the Bell Tower. After a few bursters were fired and resonators deployed, mezmer beat me (belisario93) to making the game winning link before the game was even 3 minutes in (much to the smurfs’ dismay).

2013-04-14 14.33.35

Because of how quickly this objective was reached, the organizers of the event ruled that the secondary objective be played, where the faction with the most portals at game end wins. The surprising 2:1 advantage that the enlightened had for the day became very handy and ultimately it was the frogs that came on top!

We hope to have another event like this one day, with better organization and a better resistance from the resistance!

The State of NC State #1 (4/4-4/11)

Welcome to the first edition of The State of NC State! This will be a weekly recap of the various Ingress shenanigans that occur on the NCSU campus.

First topic to cover: Dings! We had some very powerful bells ringing in this edition (in one case quite literally), so let’s get down to business!

  • Hakino134 – Level 4 on 4/4 – Congrats! Keep pushing, you’ll be level 5 in no time!
  • JamesRustle – Level 7 on 4/4- The third active campus player to hit level 7!
  • billthebutcher – Level 7 on 4/7 – Did it out of town, but that doesn’t make it any less awesome!
  • mezmer – Level 7 on 4/11 – First active female level 7! And mostly on campus wi-fi! Now that takes some patience…
  • belisario93 – Level 8 on 4/11 – I added some symbolism by hitting level 8, ringing the bell north of the capitol block, and then throwing a level 8 resonator on the portal nearby.

Campus event on Sunday the 14th

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, there is going to be a large-scale Ingress event on campus at 2:00 on the 14th. This is huge! If you’re enlightened, please make it a point to come out! More information available in this Google+ group.

Other Cool Stuff

Check out this awesome artwork done in the tunnel by an unknown artist. Hopefully there will be more to come!

Enlighten Raleigh 4/6/2013

Last Saturday the Capitol block saw green, and lots of it. Despite not going quite as planned, the night was a success and fun was had by all.

The festivities began with a meeting at a local coffee shop. Stories were exchanged, faces put to names, and supplies distributed. Oh, and cupcakes. It was Qtell2000’s birthday so some extremely delicious cupcakes were made.

Anyways, soon noname4444 explained the plans, in which the other group of people in the room must have been very confused by talk of “taking over the capitol” and “smurfs”. Then we all headed out towards the capitol block for a linkfest, quickly followed by Level 8 portals.

Of course when level 8 portals go up, opponents quickly flood into the area. OriginalViking made it to the scene first, however he caught on to our trap and only destroyed about half of the block before leaving (and presumably calling off his blue buddies with the white hats). GrrArgh, another resistance player, came by to enjoy the wonderful weather and the portals, but also unfortunately left it green. It wasn’t until just about everyone had left when finally some resistance players came down to break it all up.

Contests were also held that evening. noname held an overall AP gain contest for Level 1-6 players, of which prizes were a $15 amazon card and a little lego frog (1st place got to choose, 2nd got the other). The first place winner was Chuubastis with 52246 AP, and second place went to morlog with 19735. Another contest, held by BadAsh, was for all children 13 and under. A large bag of candy was divided among the young players by weight based on AP gain. Their poor dentists, though…

As with any other meetup, it eventually came to a close. Everyone went back home to enjoy a good night’s rest, bringing with them more gear and the satisfaction of being enlightened. The place was “hopping”, and here’s to hoping we can do it again soon!
